Neurodiversity Meetup: Neurodiversity & LGBTQ+ Identities

  • CodeBase Ltd 37a Castle Terrace Edinburgh, Scotland, EH1 2EL United Kingdom (map)

This Pride special of the Neurodiversity Meetup will be exploring the intersection of the LGBTQ+ & Neurodivergent communities. Open to all.

What is it?

A large proportion of the Neurodivergent community identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, with many stating that their Neurodivergent and Queer identities are interlinked. As June is Pride month, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and highlighting Queer history, this month's edition of the Neurodiversity Meetup will be exploring the intersection of the LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent communities.

Our Neurodiversity Meetup has been created as a space for Neurodivergent (ND) people and allies working in the Scottish Tech Ecosystem to meet and discuss how we can make our spaces more inclusive to neurodivergent individuals.

What can I expect?

We will have a short talk from Sarah Hall, event organiser at Edinburgh Queer Lindy (& CodeBase!) on how LGBTQ+ identities and Neurodiversity are connected, followed by a group discussion on the intersection of the two communities.

If you have a topic you'd like to see be discussed or a speaker/facilitator you would love to recommend, please get in touch at events.edinburgh@thisiscodebase.com.

Where and when is this taking place?

This meetup will take place from 12.30-1.30pm on Thursday 13th June at CodeBase Edinburgh, 37a Castle Terrace, Edinburgh, EH1 2EL. We will be in Bruntsfield Links - for those not based in CodeBase Edinburgh, please meet at reception and someone will show you through to the room. There is also the option to join online.

Who will be there?

The event is open to everyone, whether neurodivergent or neurotypical, who is keen to discuss creating inclusive space.

Speaker: Sarah Hall (She/They), CodeBase/Edinburgh Queer Lindy.

Sarah is our Events & Digital Coordinator here at CodeBase Edinburgh. They kickstarted our LGBTQ+ & Neurodiversity meetups to provide spaces for Queer and Neurodivergent people in tech startups to meet and discuss how we can make our spaces more inclusive. She has carried this ethos through to their work with Edinburgh Queer Lindy, an annual swing dance festival for exploring queer expression & discussing queer-inclusive spaces in the swing dance scene, where she acts as a facilitator, teacher and organiser. Being both queer and autistic, Sarah understands the intersection of these two communities first-hand, and is looking forward to bringing this experience to the Neurodiversity Meetup this month.
