Edinburgh UX meetup invites UX people of all flavours to a monthly meeting of minds – a place to share ideas and indulge in idle banter. This month, after something of a hiatus, we return to CodeBase! To mark this auspicious occasion, we are delighted to welcome Gintarė Venzlauskaite (User Experience Consultant at User Vision) who will be inviting us to discuss a subject of growing concern: Privacy UX.

6.30pm - Talk/discussion - Privacy UX: privacy as human and user experience (Gintarė Venzlauskaite)

Privacy UX: privacy as human and user experience
In the last few years, the topic of personal data privacy has been gathering more attention in both, private and professional circles. This largely stems from the growing awareness of data protection laws, big data scandals (such as Cambridge Analytica) and lawsuits against companies who failed to follow or knowingly discounted regulations on various accounts, including making privacy policies and settings accessible to users, employing deceptive design practices to collect more personal data, and utilising people’s data without meaningfully informed consent. With growing public concern as well as the introduction of more rigorous regulations, the respect for privacy, user-enabling data controls, and fairer design practices are likely to become more prominent factors for building trust between users and organisations. While advocating for more privacy-focused mindset and seeing privacy as a requirement equal to all other system and user requirements, this session will invite an open discussion considering:

  • Why privacy matters and how the response to privacy concerns is evolving

  • What design and UX has to do with data privacy

  • Principles of Privacy UX

  • How to practice privacy personally and professionally

  • What’s on the horizon for data privacy
