What is it?
Digital Skills 4 Girls is a monthly workshop for girls and non-binary young people aged 10+ who want to learn new digital skills or develop existing skills. From coding and gaming to digital design and video, DS4G is a friendly and supportive environment to learn new skills and meet new friends.
What will I learn?
Discover the world of the Interactive Light Box in this hands-on workshop. Dive into the interplay of drawing, light, and sound as you learn how to manipulate sound using your own creations. Explore the power of Pure Data and Bela, technologies that enable interactive sound experiences. Create drawings and images that transform sound in real-time.Learn how to use light-dependent resistors (LDR) to manipulate sound using Pure Data, a visual programming language.Immerse yourself in a journey of discovery, creativity, and sensory exploration.
The Interactive Light Box, is an engaging and playful electronic installation designed for audiences of all ages. Developed as part of the Room to Play course, this unique project combines drawing, sound, and animation to create an interactive experience. Using a variety of papers with different shapes, patterns, and thicknesses, participants can manipulate and alter the sound produced by the installation. Unlike traditional sound controllers, which primarily rely on buttons or knobs, the Interactive Light Box utilises physical drawing, shadows, and movement to change the sound in an interactive and intuitive manner.

Digital Skills 4 Girls September edition will be on the 5th September 2023 from 5.30-7pm. The event will take place at CodeBase Edinburgh, 37a Castle Terrace, Edinburgh, EH1 2EL.

About Dominika:
Dominika Jackowska is an Edinburgh-based animator known for seamlessly blending animation, technology, and nature. Her diverse portfolio includes animated projections, short films, digital theatre performances, and workshops. With expertise in stop-motion, hand-drawn, and After Effects animation, Dominika has worked on motion design, branding, and animations for theatre, film, and even a BAFTA Award-winning animated series. Inspired by her innovative approach of merging animation with real-world locations, she is currently conducting research in the field of interactive outdoor animation.
Registration
We ask everyone to sign up individually, so we can have an estimate of how many people want to attend, this will allow us to prevent food waste by avoiding over-catering. Please cancel your ticket if you are no longer able to attend. We will also check-in each person on Eventbrite as they join the event so make sure you've signed up to the event in order to attend! We also encourage everyone to sign up individually so we know of any accessibility requirements in advance. Tickets are very limited so be sure to register!
