Designing Games for Anxiety Problems - Stirling Science Festival

  • CodeBase Stirling 8-10 Corn Exchange Road Stirling, Scotland, FK8 2HX United Kingdom (map)

Learn how games are made and how they can help with mental health in this fun digital workshop for ages 10 -17!

What should I expect?

Are you interested in how games are made? Want to learn more about how games help with anxiety and mental health? If yes, we are running a workshop on "Designing Games for Anxiety Problems" where you will take part in three stages of game development. The first part of the workshop involves coming up with an idea. Activities are focused on brainstorming and problem-solving. The second part of the workshop involves paper prototyping (like card and board games). How do we play our game idea? What rules are needed? What happens at the end? Finally, we play-test the games we've made.

The purpose of these workshops is to help young people understand the concept of game design, user-centered design, and mental health. We will also explore how beneficial involving young people in the design process of game development can be.

Disclaimer: This workshop is for ages 10-17 only. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay with the participant during the workshop.

Who will be running this event?

Michael is a designer and researcher who is investigating how we engage young people in the design and development of mental health games. He also works as an independent Game Design Researcher and QA consultant, working across both games and web development on projects associated with Mattel, BBC and Drinkaware. Currently enrolled in a PhD in Intelligent Games, Masters in Digital Health and Bachelor of Arts in Game Design.
